Roady
The Night CleanerRoady is a recruited technical operative whose computer work helps disable government systems during the coordinated escalation of conflict. Though the available scenes offer little personal background, they establish Roady’s practical importance: the operation depends not only on armed allies but also on disrupting the systems that might respond to them.
Role and Operations
When the narrator arrives, Roady is told to begin a system shutdown and remove everything. Roady starts work on a laptop; the narrator expects the work to continue in a larger computer area previously provided for Roady. The scene places Roady at the operational center of a technical task, separate from the physical violence being prepared elsewhere.
Roady’s work has a wider reach than that initial shutdown order suggests. Over the course of a few hours, battles break out in cities around the world, while the people recruited by the narrator act freely. Roady has infected the main systems of government with a virus, a task the narrator judges well executed. The disruption is expected to take governments at least two hours to overcome.
Consequences and Narrative Significance
That two-hour delay is the operation’s critical contribution: it buys time for the attackers and leaves authorities struggling to respond as the crisis spreads. The narrator watches the moon begin to cross the sun from the top of Griffin Enterprises Tower in Seahill as the planned chaos approaches. Roady is not shown taking part in the bridge attack assigned to Ajax and Monica; instead, the virus provides a parallel, less visible means of advancing the same larger offensive.
